Me and Em |
New Years day, as is typical with most, was set aside to be a day full relaxation, recovery, and recounts of the previous night's events with humorously accurately detail. My favorite was of Will singing "All the Single Ladies" at the Subway down George Street at 3:30 in the morning, meatball sub in hand. Maybe him and
Bendy Em should start a street show duet. Then again maybe not; Em is as good as it gets.
Next up was relaxation and recovery, the latter typically needs up to 3 days for the tanks to refill. Unless you spend it on Bondi Beach, in which case you will be fully revitalized. Instead of the typical run down of daily events, I figured I would make a top 10 reasons to visit Bondi. Some personal, some universal. Here we go; in no specific order, of course:

Proud Speedo Rockers.

Showing off on Bondi. |
#10: Dudes are totally cool in speedos: If anyone knows me well, you'll know that I love a good speedo, and I love to rock it. On Bondi, the coolest dudes rock their banana hammocks with such a style that turns the heads of the most conditioned of beach people watchers. Big plus in my book, as well as the lucky women on Bondi.
#9: Girls can wear only speeds, too: We all know that seeing a man in a speedo makes one long to fit in to the elite of beach flaunters. Those that are "sexy", and they know it. Ladies feel the same urge to represent their swagger in just a speedo. Or bikini, or whatever it is you kids call them these days. Tops are for losers, we all know that on Bondi.

Fun place, just don't get stabbed |
#8: People come from all over the world to visit Bondi: Personally, I met up with one of my good buddies from France whom I met in Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand this fall, Max Leveau. A French dude who absolutely hates the French is someone I get along with swimmingly. Catching up with one another and hearing about his wacky adventures across the rest of SE Asia once we parted ways. Turns out it was quite an exciting adventure, as one of our buddies who traveled with us got stabbed at the famed and often tourist foreboding "Slinky's" in Koh Phi Phi. He was fine, but we had heard similar stories from other travelers. Makes me feel fortunate to have avoided the same misfortune when we spent several nights at their fire shows. Chris, the one who got stabbed, is also fine by the way. He is extremely durable. I also ran into a couple of friends from England who I am planning on catching up with tonight. Crazy odds to run into friends from all over, but that is how Bondi is, I reckon.
#7: Bondi has some of the best surfing in the world:
Unfortunately
this means that it is also slammed with incredible surfers. A little daunting for the sub-novice surfer such as myself. Nonetheless, there is a very impressive display of
shredding to be seen in the surf. Makes the beach all the more enjoyable.

SLAMMED |
#6: White sandy beaches: I thought I had seen some of the most beautifully secluded white sand beaches around, but Bondi is up there with the best of them. Although there is a with a slightly more crowded feel. Slightly being a bit of a euphemism, one might say. We had to fiercely defend our small parcel of land, much the same as we did with our prized curb on New Years eve.
#5: Some of the best nightlife in Sydney: Clubs, bars, karaoke, and anything else one could ask for all right on the beach. We made a stop a bit off the beach at an awesome beer garden that would have made a killing in Atlanta...business op? I think so. Service is terrible, but the beer is cold and company is friendly. Enough for me.

Bondi Shore Thing 2012: never again to be missed |
#4: Ridiculous Beachside Venue: Unfortunately we missed the annual
Shore Thing festival on NYE this year due to lack in funding and regrettable planning, but we got to see how epic the site of the venue was. The stage sits right on the beach, giving the crowd an iconic Australian ocean backdrop accented by a gorgeous night's sky. And, of course, there were also the amazing fireworks to add the the spectacle. I'm still kicking myself for missing this one. I'll be back, shore thing.

Gnarly dudes, but those caps kill their street cred.
|
#3: Best lifeguards in the world: Rightfully so, as Australia has some of the most forcefully tremendous oceans, Bondi Beach's lifeguards were impressive (even though they wear ridiculous hats). The only people allowed out of the designated swimming area on this particular day were the experienced surfers who know exactly what they are doing out there. For us rookies, Lifeguards float out beyond the break to survey the crowd on surfboards, cruise the coast on boat and jet ski prepared to pull anyone in distress on board, and patrol on foot along the swim area, prepared to hustle to the aid for any of the ridiculous tourists that may have forgotten their swimmies. Us included. I witnessed 3 different people get pulled to shore by the jet ski in the short time I battled the waves and the cool Pacific waters. It's a rough country, and I am starting to fall in love.
#2: Great food: I have not had a bad meal since I have been in Australia. I take that back, the "Hammy Parmy Schnitzel" I got at Star Bar was pretty rough, but I am pretty sure that was a night club's poor attempt at being a restaurant. But that's besides the point. I ate 4 different times at Bondi in an effort to refuel the tanks, and each time I was very impressed. There is an option for everyone and all in all everything seems to be top notch. There is a price to be paid for the view, of course, but it is worth it. Service was some of the worst around, however. I blame it on the New Year's incessantly potent hangover.

Awesome wave... |
#1: The women are top notch: I normally am not one to "turn a head" at the sight of a beautiful woman when in an incredibly beautiful, new country. But you send me a man that claims he didn't almost break his neck walking the beaches of Bondi, and I will show you a liar.
Bottom Line: Go to Bondi, it is not for everyone, but I think that everyone can appreciate the beauty, power, feel, and action that Bondi is known for.
Cheers.
